Heaven's Gate and its stunning views of the Longleat estate

Heaven's Gate

Heaven's Gate is a much loved local walk and manageable by people of almost all fitness levels and ages.  It's reached by a short drive from Frome, through Chapmanslade, to the Longleat roundabout where you take the Center Parcs turning and proceed up the hill for about 1.5 miles.  The car park is at Nockatt Coppice and the postcode is BA12 7PU.

There is a circular walk of 1.7 miles or a shorter 'straight' one.  The circular walk takes you properly into the woods while the straight one is on a better path, is more open and more light (just shorter!). Now is a great time to catch the leaves turning golden but it is best to arrive around midday when the sun is at it highest.

Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead after passing through the sprung gate at the end of the 'straight' walk. Beyond the gate there is a large open space where there are some large standing stones / sculpted stones. This is the top of Prospect Hill and it got that name for a very good reason: at the far side one can enjoy spectacular views across the Longleat Estate, including Longleat House itself.

There are benches to sit on so the infirm can take the weight off their legs.  One can also picnic there but obviously all rubbish should be taken home!

For an extended jaunt head eastwards through the woods to Shearwater Lake. Cley Hill (covered here) is also very close and offers more wonderful views.
