The return of the Frome Independent Market

Sunday 3rd October saw the first Frome Independent Market of the autumn. It was a lovely crisp start to the morning and as we walked down to the centre of Frome the bright sunlight and brilliant blue sky made the Wesleyan Chapel looked more like a Greek temple than a grey English church!

As was to be expected on such a beautiful day, Frome was thronging with visitors from near and far and there was an almost festive atmosphere in the Market Place, perhaps because of a sense that Covid-19 is fading into the background, or perhaps because the chance to get out and enjoy the day was just too much to resist! Everywhere we turned we saw delighted visitors soaking up the sun and taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the Independent Market.

There was a father and daughter duo busking outside the TSB building and later various bands entertained the crowd outside Costa. One group, the Mellow Tones, attracted a particularly good crowd. Incidentally, Mark Shotton, the group's bass guitarist, achieved minor celebrity status in Bruton last year, as he carried out his postman duties in various comical costumes to help cheer up people struggling with the isolation of lockdown.

Although the weather threw some surprises at the shoppers they were not to be deterred, especially with the excellent selection of street food on offer and the chance to grab a pint of local cider! As the afternoon progressed we wandered up to Catherine Street where Matt Mellen's Eco-Hustler gallery was laying on entertainment by DJ.

How much water does Frome use?

Every single water company in the UK has been tasked to give you a helping hand in reducing water usage.

Bristol Water have been nosing around our water consumption and noticed that on average, households in Frome are using 292 litres of water a day - equivalent to running your washing machine nearly 30 times a week or pouring 715 cups of tea down the drain! They have set a target to reduce usage by seven litres a day per person by 2050. Just to paint a picture for you – in an average home of two adults and two children, that’s around two full bathtubs a week! So, are you up for the challenge?
